Pengertian
Magento adalah aplikasi web yang berbasis CMS (content management system) khusus untuk e-commerce dan program web. Di luncurkan pada tanggal 31 Maret 2008 dan dikelola oleh Magento Inc. CMS ini juga mempunyai sebuah website yang berisi berbagai hal mengenai eCommerce seperti produk, konsultasi, tutorial, support, dokumentasi, forum, template, extension, dsb.

Sejarah
Magento sebagai aplikasi web ecommerce (penjualan secara online) yang mulai diluncurkan pada tanggal 31 Maret 2008 dan dikelola oleh Magento Incorporation (Magento Inc). Berdasarkan perkembangannya, aplikasi web ecommerce ini mulai dikembangkan pada awal tahun 2007 dan dirilis pertama kali pada tanggal 31 Agustus 2007, kemudian pada tanggal 30 Mei 2010 Magento merilis aplikasi ecommerce untuk versi mobile.

Magento dibuat sebagai online shop dengan fitur terlengkap untuk kategori e-commerce. Semua yang butuhkan oleh situs online shop seperti, Order Management, Customer Accounts, Customer Service, Payment, Shipping dan Catalog Management sudah terserdia.
